Hello, welcome to Ms. Johnson’s MAKING THE NEWS blog. This blog is intended to give a view of current and upcoming events in our classroom and our school. Both parents and students are invited to visit and leave comments. Take a peek at the events calendar and informational links. I’m looking forward to a productive year.

Dear Parents,
Reading is essential for all first graders. I encourage a daily home reading schedule-you read and allow your child to read-which will boost self confidence. Guided reading in the classroom is my approach to meeting the needs of every child. For more information about guided reading click here
SIGHT WORD PRACTICE-In addition to the weekly spelling word list I am suggesting that parents create, or continue to add to, a word wall at home for daily practice. The word wall should include (but are not limited to) spelling words, new words learned while reading, and sight words. Please post any questions or comments you may have concerning reading. For activites to practice using sight words click here
PICTURE/WORD ASSOCIATION PRACTICE-Every week we work on matching first, middle, and end letter sounds to pictures. I suggest parents practice daily with students using old magazines and items around the house. Parents should ask students to tell what the object in the picture is then tell the letter and its sound.
Thank you

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and so many families, who are less fortunate then our own, are in need of basic necessities at this time. Parents keep your eyes open for opportunities to give to food drives throughout our community.
Thank you
